Class#1
Book: Al Aqeedah At-Tahawiyyah
Lecturer: Shaykh Fahad ibn Sulayman Al- Fuhayd
Date: February 2nd, 2008

These are my notes based on my little understanding of the arabic lecture.

Introduction

Shaykh started by praising Allah and sending his Salah and salam on Prophet and his companions. Then he thanked Allah for all the bounties and his blessings on His slaves and all of us and he thanked those who helped in bringing these classes, especially Shaykh Zahid and all the brothers involved in helping us to get this lecture.

Introduction to the book Al-'Aqeedah At-Tahawiyyah

Shaykh then says that he is going to explain the book Al Aqeedah At Tahawiyyah in the upcoming classes. It is a blessed aqeedah by which Allah has helped many. Many students have studied it and scholars have explained it. And it has importance from the way many groups have accepted it. Because of this there are some who have explained it in the way that opposes the methodology of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah. So the students should learn the meanings of the sentences in the way of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah.

Introduction to the author

This book is written by Imam Tahawi. He is Imam Abu Jafar Ahmed ibn Muhammed ibn Salamah Al Azdi Al Hajri Al Misri and he is known as At Tahawi relating him to the village named Taha in the highlands of Egypt. He was born in 239 H and died in 321 H and he was from the renowned scholars. He was Hanafi but not from the Muta’assibin(fanatics). He was from those who took from the evidences and followed the evidences. He has to his credit many books which prove his looking for ahadith and his efforts in freeing people from that which befell them of blind following.

Explanations of Al-'Aqeedah At-Tahawiyyah

What is intended is that from the books of At-Tahawi is Al Aqeedah At Tahawiyyah which is widely accepted by Ahlus Sunnah was Jamaah. But as we said before, many have explained it in the way which opposes Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah as noted by Ibn Abil Izz Al Hanafi in the preface and initial commentary when he referred to the long introduction he said: “Indeed, commentators explained this aqeedah and from them are those who are influenced by the creed of Ahlul Bid’ah wal Kalam( the people of innovations and rhetoric). He said: I seek Allah’s help in compiling this explanation upon the way of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama’ah. Therefore, the best explanation where the students of knowledge should learn is the renowned explanation by Shaykh ibn Abil Izz Al Hanafi and it is a greatly beneficial and helpful explanation in which he collected what others did not collect. And from the later times there are those who wrote extensive explanations in the way of Ahlus Sunnah and from them is His Eminence, His Excellency, our noble scholar Shaykh Salih Al Ash-Shaykh, Minister of Islamic Affairs, Endowments, Da’wah and Guidance in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He has a beneficial and helpful commentary of this Aqeedah. And it has been also explained by many People of Knowledge and many of their explanations have been recorded in audio and some of them have been compiled (in writing). And this was the summarized introduction of what is related to this Aqeedah, its author and its explanations.

Now we will talk about some important prefaces:

Important Prefaces

1.The First Preface

This is relating to the importance of studying the Aqeedah, its explanations and evidence, study of all these is a very important work. Allah made salvation and happiness and made happy life and illuminated in the following of that which was revealed i.e. the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger. And this does not come but with Eeman Sahih(true faith). Faith in Allah , His Messengers, Angels, His books, last day, fate – good and evil from the correct perspective and not from the distorted point of view. This, my brothers, is a major issue and it is obligatory to give attention to it and it is the summary of the Da’wah of the Messengers. They called to this basic issue- eeman in Allah, His worship and His oneness. The books were revealed based on this and it is obligatory upon the brothers to ponder over it and understand the true meaning of the message. Then comes the legislation- obligations and salawat, sawm, zakat and hajj. Verily these will testify the first foundation i.e. oneness of Allah and His sincere worship. It is necessary for the believers to pay attention to this issue as Allah said:

وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ

{And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) but We revealed to him (saying): “Lâ ilâha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allaah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else).”} [al-Anbiyaa’ 21:25]

And as the Prophet said to Muaadh ibn Jabal when he sent him to Yemen, “ You are going to a people from the Ahlul kitab so the first you should call them to is the testification that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah"... pointing to singling out Allah alone in worship and then mentioned salah, zakah, etc. after that. So this sharee’ah is a path to Allah. This sharee’ah with obligations and prohibitions does not become correct without the greatest foundation and it is correctness of the creed. Next we move on to the second preface.

2.The Second Preface

It is that the salaf as-salih ( the pious predecessors) understood this concept from the Book of Allah and the sunnah and gave it precedence over the other affairs of the deen. They made the Aqeedah, Eeman and tawheed precede over the remaining affairs of the deen from the perspective of da’wah, actions and from the perspective of obligations. At the head of the Salaf-as-Salih are the sahabah. They understood this concept and explained it. Likewise their followers, the taabaeen, and the taba taaba’een from the Imams of Sunnah followed their example and abided by it. And so it is possible for students to read the books of predecessors and know their great attention to aqeedah but we should pay attention that they named the writings on this issue by the name of sunnah and by eeman like the sunnah of Abdullah ibn Ahmed or the sunnah of Khallal and the eeman by Abu Ubayd and as forth. And there are some other names but the target is one. This issue has many different shapes in the people some following the school of thought of Shafa’ee and some Hanafi and some Maliki and some Hanbali. So some of the small students think that Shafa’ee is against hanafi or Maliki or Hanbali and Maliki is against all others etc. They don’t know that they were together in aqeedah. And there was no difference in aqeedah between the Imams of sunnah. They were of one aqeedah. As for the fiqh issues and the ones of Ijtihaad theirs sayings are based on what reached them from knowledge or their Ijtihaad or likewise. As for aqeedah there was no difference. This is the second preface.

3.The Third Preface

The difference in which people have grouped – people are one group on eeman in Allah. They differ in its actualization, what is intended by it like the sect called the people of Wahdatul wujood. They said: Eeman in Allah is to believe Allah is everywhere, and the creator is the created being, and the created being is the creator itself. With that they make false claims of eeman in Allah. Then there is another issue, you find people who negate the attributes of Allah and His names, so this is not eeman in Allah. And there is one who says calling upon other than Allah and seeking aid from the auliya and Prophet and say that what he has is eeman in Allah. The da’wah concerning eeman in Allah is established. It is by the tongue or by what these know it as. But we should know the difference between what salaf said and what these people from those against the deen say. What is the difference? We see the sayings of the salaf are based on that which is in the book of Allah and the sunnah. Then we see those by these people, then we will know the right from the wrong. Important factor is not what each calls oneself. Everyone says that he is correct or that he actualizes tawheed but after investigation you find that he does not have evidence and he has nothing but blind following of fanaticism, or following desires or clinging to the contrary hadeeth or like wise. So it is necessary for the believer to know this criterion and know that this matter requires looking into what is with those who departed. Everything is weighed upon the Book of Allah and the sunnah of the Prophet. This is the third preface.

4.The Fourth Preface

It is that the Book and the sunnah and the meanings taken by the salaf-as-salih were enough and appropriate. This does not require supplementing or addition. When some of the people talk they add things from themselves. You find in their addition shortcomings, deception and falsehood. This is the meaning of the Prophet’s saying: “Upon you is to follow my sunnah and the sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs after me. Hold on to it and bite on to it by the molars. Beware of the newly invented affairs, for every invention is misguidance.

This, my brothers, are the prefaces I liked to present before you on our study of this Aqeedah. We will soon Inshaallah get to a complete explanation as we advance with these lessons.
