Default "My Experience & Transcriptions/Notes from UIA Seminar 2007" - By Ahmad Bader

As Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu:

Bismillaah innal hamdulillaah was salaatu
was salaamu 'ala muhammadan 'abduhu
wa rasoollaahu wa 'ala aalihi wa sahbihi ajma'een wa ba'd...

I would like to share my transcriptions/notes with you all so that we may all benefit from amongst those who went as well as those who did not get to go. I pray that this is done with sincerity and that Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) blesses it and I pray that we all benefit from it and gain from it good). Ameen!

I intend on placing all of the class transcriptions throughout the next few months insha'Allah in this thread in the order in which we had the events, so please make dua that I stay consistant upon this intention and in actualizing it as I truly pray this benefits you all as much as it has me. This is the first event we had in Madinah with our noble Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Al Aqeel on the topic of "Seeking Knowledge and Uthman Ibn Affan".

May Allah bless our noble scholars and preserve them, and bless our noble brothers and sisters who attended as well as those blessed people who were responsible in putting this truly unique seminar together. Ameen!!!
-------------------------------------------------------------

Our Noble Shaykh:

Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab Al-Aqeel (May Allah Subhana wa Ta'ala preserve him)

Associate Professor of Aqeedah in University of Madinah and author of many books. He currently teaches in the College of Dawah and also in some of the other colleges and universities.

Date – 24th of Rajab 1428- Tuesday August 7
Topic – "Seeking Knowledge – Khalifah Uthman Ibn 'Affan"

AL-QURAN WA AS SUNNAH SOCIETY OF NEW YORK
WWW.ALBASEERAH.ORG – UTHMAN IBN AFFAN SEMINAR 2007
24TH RAJAB TO 28TH RAJAB 1428 = AUG. 7TH TO AUG. 11TH 2007
MADINAH-AL-MUNAWARRAH

The Shaykh began with Khutbat-ul Hajjah, (We praise Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and we seek His assistance and we seek His forgiveness and we seek refuge with Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) from the evil of ourselves and our bad deeds. Whoever Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) guides there is none that can lead him astray and whomever he leads astray there is none who can guide him and I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except for Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). He is alone and without any partners, and I bare witness that Muhammad is His slave and messenger. Then he mentioned the three ayats known for Khutbat-ul-Hajjah (in Al Imran, An Nisaa 1st ayah, Al Ahzab towards end). After that, he said "The best speech is the book of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and the finest guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and indeed the worst of all affairs is the newly invented matter, and every newly invented matter is a bid'ah and all bid'ah is astray and all that is astray is in the hellfire.

After that he then said he would like to welcome us to the city of the Prophet (Sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) Taybat-ul-Taibah, the city where Iman always returns to and where it is always found and a place where the hearts of the believers are always turned to. So he welcomes us to this Dawrah and this seminar who he thanks Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) first and foremost and then those who are responsible from the Quran was Sunnah Society for putting this together and we ask Allah (Subhana wa ta'ala) to place this on their scale of good deeds on the day of Judgment.

The Shaykh (Hafidhullah) said from that which is known is that seeking knowledge is from the most beloved actions to Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and that seeking knowledge precedes action as Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) has told us "And KNOW that there is none worthy of worship except for Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and then seek forgiveness for your sins" and for this reason Al Imam al Bukhari (Rahimhullah) entitled one of the chapters of his book "Knowledge precedes statements and actions." For this reason, Ibn Qayyim (Rahimhullah) said it is upon the Muslim to make jihad with himself to actualize these 4 things.

1- To attain knowledge of that which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came with.

2- To act according to that which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came with.

3- That he calls to that which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came with.

4- That he perseveres with that which what the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) came with (ex. Harm, fitnah, et.) That he is patient with whatever harm he faces.

And these four things, we find them altogether in the Surah that is blessed Surah Al Asr.

1. By Al-'Asr (the time).

2. Verily! Man is in loss,

3. Except those who believe (in Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, and recommend one another to the truth (i.e. order one another to perform all kinds of good deeds (Al-Ma'rûf)which Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) has ordained, and abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds (Al-Munkar)which Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) has forbidden), and recommend one another to patience (for the sufferings, harms, and injuries which one may encounter in Allah's Cause during preaching His religion of Islamic Monotheism or Jihad, etc.).

Imam Ash Shaafi'ee (Rahimhullah) said if people ponder over only this Surah it would be sufficient for them. He, (Rahimhullah), said in the book of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), the virtue of seeking knowledge and the virtues of sitting in the gatherings of knowledge are many and are well known. However, there are two very important affairs that remain.

1- The first thing is "Have you really understood these texts that deal with the virtue of knowledge and its people?"

2- The second thing is "What effects do these texts have upon us?"

So let us take an example. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "Whoever travels a path seeking therein knowledge; Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) will make easy for him the path to the Jannah." The Shaykh says so when you were coming to this particular lesson, did you put into your mind, and did you imagine that you were treading a path to Jannah? He said because there is a big difference between listening to these particular texts and just hearing them and actually hearing and understanding them.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said "Indeed the scholars are the inheritors of the Prophets." The Prophets did not leave behind any wealth, no dinar and no dirham, no dollars and no cents, no pounds and no pents; however they left behind Ilm, knowledge, so whoever grasped on to the knowledge has attained a great thing and whoever is held back by his actions, he will not be pushed forth by his lineage.

So by knowledge you become of those who inherit from the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the more knowledge you gain the closer you will become to Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.)

Were you imagining this? Were you thinking this when you came to this lesson?

He said listen for example to the statement of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) where he said "Indeed the Angles spread their wings and encompass the student of knowledge out of pleasure for what he is doing."

He said we are three different beings or species that are well known. That is the species of the:

1- Human Being

2- Jinn

3- Angels

So if the child of Adam seeks knowledge then he will be magnified or glorified amongst these three species or beings.

The Angels will glorify him and if they see him traveling upon the path of knowledge they stop. And they bring their wings close to them out of glorification for him until he passes by him.

And the Jinn and the Devils they are afraid of the student of knowledge. And for this reason the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) because the jinn and devils hold the person of knowledge in esteem and they are afraid of them, this is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told Umar (Radiallahu anhu) "there is not a path that you travel except that Shaytaan travels a different path."

For this reason it is important for the student of knowledge to know the value of his own self and his status as it relates to Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says that Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) raises those who are given knowledge from amongst you and those who believe and have been given ilm, He raises them in darajaat (levels).

He said and this is because if you know the value of yourself, then all of the other things that you face in the path of seeking knowledge become easy. The Shaykh said he wants to read to us another hadeeth which you find rarely a student of knowledge that understands this hadeeth. It is a great hadeeth and has a glad tiding for every student of knowledge.

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "There is no group of people that gathers in one of the houses of the houses of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) except that the Angels surround them and they will be encompassed by Mercy and tranquility will descend upon them and Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) will mention them with those who are with Him."

The Shaykh asked when you hear the likes of this hadeeth as you seek the knowledge, are you imagining what this means? Do you imagine that Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), if you are seeking knowledge with Ikhlas and are upon the sunnah, do you realize and are you imagining that Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) is mentioning you by your name and praising you to those angels that are with Him. Those Angels who are carrying His Arsh (Throne)? He is mentioning you by your name to them. Did you imagine that?

And for this reason, Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says "And remember me, I will remember you, and Thank Me and do not be ungrateful."

In a hadith qudsi, Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says "I am with my servant as long as he remembers me and his lips are moving in my remembrance. If he remembers me then I remember him to Myself, and if he mentions me in an assembly, I mention him in an assembly which is greater then them."

To think about these texts, it helps the student of knowledge to gain the desire to seek more knowledge and to be active in seeking the knowledge. However, regretfully, many of us read these texts and we don't apply them to ourselves, either out of ignorance or out of humbleness. He thinks that when he reads these texts it talks only about the scholars and people of the past only but this is a big mistake. He said every person who seeks knowledge in every time and place and his intention is sincere and upon the Sunnah then he will gain this reward insha'Allah.

This seminar that we are participating in and we are now in its first lecture on the first day of this particular seminar, it carries the name and entitled with the name of the 3rd Khalifah Uthman ibn Affan (Radiallahu anhu.)

The Shaykh said we will look at some of the aspects of his blessed biography and by knowing and studying the biographies of the Sahabah and others from amongst them it brings about 2 things.

1- You love the righteous

2- You take from their examples and grow to love them. And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "The individual is with the one whom he loves."

And the people of Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jamaa'ah have taken a middle course as it relates to the companions of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and in comparison to the remainder of sects in Islam.

And they are in the middle as it relates to looking to the other sects such as the Rafidah (Shia), the Khawarij, and the extreme Sufi's. And all of the companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Ahlu Sunnah loved them for the pleasure of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). They do not love them with Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). They loved them for Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), and not with Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). We supplicate to Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) FOR them, and we do not supplicate them along with Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala).

And that is because Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) mentioned in praising the believers that they say of those who come after them "Oh Allah forgive us and our brothers who came before us in Iman and do not place in our hearts any enmity towards them."

And we also hold in high esteem the way that they understood the book of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). Also the way that they understood the Sunnah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

And we believe that the way to be successful in this life and the hereafter is to follow their way, because Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says in Surah At Tawbah "Those who are first and foremost from amongst the Muhajiroon and the Ansar, and all of those who followed them perfectly (with ihsan), Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him.)

We are not from amongst the Muhajireen and the Ansar, so what is there left? Those who follow them perfectly! And this, May Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) preserve and protect you all, is the correct understanding and meaning of loving the companions of the Messenger (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

And on this basis then we will talk about Uthman ibn Affan (Radiallahu anhu).

His name was Uthman Ibn Affan Ibn Abul Aas Al Umawi. Bani Ummayah was a big tribe from amongst the tribe of Quraysh. Their lineage meets with the lineage of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in his great grandfather Abdul Manaf. And this is something that is customary amongst the Arabs that they memorize the names of their grandfathers, great grandfathers, and great great grandfathers. (The Shaykh joked here and said in English "100 grandfathers.")

He was born in Makkah, after the Year of the Elephant by 6 years. And the actual occurrence with the elephant is well known and a whole chapter of the Quran was revealed talking about it. Within it the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was born during the year of the elephant and the Arabs used to use these great events as historical landmarks and this, the years of the elephant, was a great event. Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) made it as an introduction to the coming of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). Uthman (Radiallahu anhu) grew up in Makkah and the people of Makkah, the houses of Makkah, were used by business men and the people of Makkah were generally business people. And they were people known as "the people of the Haram." So they combined between 2 great things as relates to the people of Jahilliyaah.

1- They were protectors of the Holy Place (so they had what you can call a holy religion.)

2- Also, what they had at that time was wealth in that particular time.

The Arabs used to come to Makkah from everywhere, and hold the people of Makkah in high esteem. And of course they held Makkah in high esteem. And for that reason Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) mentioned that in Surat-ul-Quraysh that:

1. (It is a great Grace and Protection from Allâh), for the taming of the Quraish,

2. (And with all those Allâh's Grace and Protections for their taming, We cause) the (Quraish) caravans to set forth safe in winter (to the south), and in summer (to the north without any fear),

3. So let them worship (Allâh) the Lord of this House (the Ka'bah in Makkah).

4. (He) Who has fed them against hunger, and has made them safe from fear.

And this land was where Uthman was raised so he was from a noble and rich family. And also from a glorified place. And with all of that being mentioned, he was still from the most humble of the people. This shows you something about the great character of Uthman (Radiallahu anhu.) For this reason, they, the Quraysh, used to love Uthman. Even the women of Quraysh used to make songs about Uthman and sing them to their children. So they used to say to their children as they held them: "I love you, by Allah, (Subhana wa Ta'ala) the way that the Quraysh loved Uthman" because he had such a noble character and for that reason he was one of the first to believe in the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam).

He looked at the dawah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and saw that it coincided with his own character. He accepted Islam at the hands of Abu Bakr Siddique (Radiallahu anhu). And Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), favored him with a great favor by having he Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) marry off his daughter Ruqayah to him. And that family was from the blessed families of Islaam. Because Uthman, after accepting Islaam was harmed by the Quraysh, and this is from the evidences that the Aqeedah of an individual takes precedence over their lineage. And this is for the Muslims as well as with other then the Muslims.

When the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) saw the great harm that his companions were facing by the Quraysh and it became unbearable for some of them, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) allowed them to make hijrah to Abyssinia and the king of Habashah (Abyssinia) was from amongst the Christians. He was also, along with being a Christian, a person of knowledge and justice, and this is why the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised him even before he accepted Islaam.

When it came to the people that made the hijrah to Habashah, from amongst them was Uthman and his wife, the daughter of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) Ruqayah, that the people of Makkah accepted Islam, they left Abyssinia and all returned to Makkah. And both the people of Habashah and the Muslims benefited greatly from that particular hijrah.

As for the Muslims, they gained safety and security from the harm of the Quraysh and as for the people of Habashah, some of them embraced Islaam and the greatest of them was their King, An Najashi. So he is considered to be from amongst the Tabiyeen as he accepted Islaam at the hands of the Sahabah and he did not see the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.) And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) prayed over him the Salatul Ghayb.

Then when Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) allowed the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to make Hijrah from Makkah to Madinah, Uthman and Ruqayah both came to Madinah leaving Makkah. Uthman began to work in trade here in Madinah and Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) blessed his wealth and he gained a lot of wealth. Until his wealth became so great that it was said that when his caravan would come to Madinah, the houses of Madinah would shake due to the amount of Camels that brought in the goods in that caravan.

And even though he had a lot of wealth and was busy with his trade this didn't prevent him from sticking close to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and benefiting from him and taking knowledge from him. And Uthman was from amongst those who wrote down the revealed Surah's and collected it and was amongst those who memorized the entire Quran. Many of the Tabiyeen and the Sahabah learned from him and memorized the Quran from him. He was present in ever battle of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) except for Badr. That is because his wife, Ruqayah was ill so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded Uthman to remain behind and stay with Ruqayah and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) still gave him glad tidings of one who was fighting along with them. And that shows us that Islam honors the woman and that it is upon a man to care for his female relatives from amongst his mother, his wife, his daughter, and his sister. So you see here that Uthman didn't go to the battle in order to stay behind and care for his wife and this is from the evidences that show how Islaam is with the women. And this refutes those who say Islaam oppresses the women.

And since we are on this subject, the Shaykh wants to mention another hadeeth about the same subject. Our mother Khadijah (Radiallahu anha), she helped the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) in a tremendous way with her wealth, with her status, with her intellect, and even with her body. She aided the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) from the first day he received revelation. Gibrael came to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said "Oh Muhammad, this is Khadijah she is coming your way and she has some food with her, so recite upon her the Salaams from Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala)" meaning that you say "Oh Khadijah, Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) sends you the Salaam." Have you ever heard this type of honor? Never! Have you ever heard this virtue or honor given to any male or female other then Khadijah? "And give her the glad tidings of a house in Jannah made of gold and she will not face any tiredness therein" and she is a woman. So Islaam does not oppress the woman at all. As Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) mentions that in Islaam whoever does an atoms weight of good or evil whether male or female, then they will see its outcome and whoever from among them repents male or female, Allah will accept from them their repentance.

When the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) returned from Badr and was in Madinah for a short period of time, Ruqayah, the daughter of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and wife of Uthman (Radiallahu anhu) passed away and from the Prophet's (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam)'s love for Uthman he married the sister of Ruqayah, Umm Kulthum to Uthman (Radiallahu anhu). And so the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) along with his love for him held him to a high esteem.

One time Abu Bakr (Radiallahu anhu) entered upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) didn't change anything about the way he was sitting and after that Umar entered upon the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and he didn't change anything about the way he was sitting but when Uthman entered upon him, he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) changed the way he was sitting so Aishah (Radiallahu anha) was surprised at this, and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said to her, "Shall I not be shy of the one whom the Angels are shy of." Uthman (Radiallahu anhu) himself, was well known for being shy, even in Jahilliyaah before Islam. And for that reason it is said about Uthman that he never took off all his clothes out of shyness. And if he wanted to make ghusl then he would do so in the corner in a sitting position and then after that he would put on his clothes, all out of his extreme shyness. This reminds us of Musa (alayhi sallam), because he was one who did contrary to that which was the norm with the Jews of that time. So he did not take off his clothes in front of the people.

Uthman used his wealth in the path of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and gave away a lot of charity and not just charity but also endowments (trusts). From the strange and amazing things is that the only Sahabi whose sadaqah actually remains till today is the charity of Uthman (Radiallahu anhu.)

Because, the well that Uthman purchased in the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) told him he will go to Jannah as a result of it, still exists today. And many of the big buildings that you see around here right now are built upon the lands that were given as an endowment by Uthman Ibn Affan (Radiallahu anhu.) And this is from the evidences of his expansiveness in giving his money for the pleasure of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala.) And from the most famous of his charities was the fact that he prepared the Army of Al Usrah.

So at one time, Uthman came with a bunch of gold coins (dinars) and placed them in the lap of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam). There was so many that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) became happy and said "There is no harm upon Uthman whatever he does, after today it doesn't matter." And the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) gave him glad tidings that he will be a Shaheed and also that he will enter the Jannah. Also the Sahabah had consensus that Uthman was the third of three.

Abdullah ibn Umar (Radiallahu anhu) said: "we used to say at the time of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) that the best amongst us was three, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman."

One time he went out with the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) to the mountains of Uhud and the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) climbed the mountain and they were at that time four. The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. So the mountain began to shake. So the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) struck the mountain with his foot and said "be firm oh Uhud, because upon you is a Prophet, a Siddique and two Shaheed's (martyrs)." So the Siddique is Abu Bakr, and the two Shaheed's (martyrs) were Uthman and Umar.

Uthman became the Khalifah by way of consensus of the Muslims after Umar was martyred and the people who made the shura at that time were six.

Ali ibn Abu Talib
Uthman ibn Affan
Abdur Rahman bin Awf
Sa`ad ibn Abi Waqqas
Zubayr ibn al-Awwam
Talha ibn Ubayd-Allah

They went to great lengths to pick the best among them:

a) So after three days of consulting amongst themselves and making istikhara, they picked the best of them and that was Uthman (Radiallahu anhu) and they gave him the bayah and pledged to him and made him the Khalifah and then the remainder of the Muslims gave him allegiance also. So this Khilafah came into existences by way of consensus of the Muslims. So for these reasons anyone who doubts or criticizes the Khilafah of Uthman as being the third Khalifah, then they are in fact criticizing all the Muslims.

When he became the Khalifah he did many great things for Islaam, and the people came to accept Islam in his time in waves. Many of the lands in the East and the West entered into Islaam as well. The Muslims at his time, lived in a high status. This is something that made the enemies of Islaam and the Muslims very jealous, angry, and envious. So for this reason, they put together a plan to destroy Islaam. And they knew that the Dawla (Empire) of Islaam was too powerful to beat militarily, so for this reason their plan was of ideological warfare and not one of military warfare. What they wanted to happen was to have the Muslims fight the Muslims. So for this reason many of the Jews of that time became to act as Muslims and the main one was Abdullah Ibn Saba and he also pretended that he was pious and pretended that he was calling to Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala). Then he actually acted like he was going to fight in the way of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), and he made the crux of his dawah criticism of Uthman and came up with a particular issue that all of the people love and that was the issue of Money.

So he began to say Uthman is misappropriating the money of the Muslims and that he gave to his tribe, Bani Ummayah, and that he doesn't give it out properly or equally and is not just amongst the people under him. And so everything he was saying was about Uthman, Uthman, Uthman, until the people forgot the virtue of Uthman and by this the people began to fill their hearts with spite of Uthman.

For this reason because they forgot the virtues of Uthman, and filled their hearts with spite of Uthman, this is why Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) tells us to say and recite Surah An-Naas from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws from the breasts of mankind and of the jinn. Just like the jinn whisper, there is also men who whisper.

And al Imam Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab (Rahimhullah) in his book "Kitab at Tawheed" discuses a chapter about magic and in it, he discusses the issue of An Namimah (Tale Carrying) because he says just as magic has the ability to corrupt that which is between people from love, likewise so does tale carrying. For this reason the Salaf used to prevent and warn people from sitting with the people of Innovation and would say don't sit with them so that your hearts wouldn't become sick.

So this is the way that this hypocrite, Abdullah ibn Saba, gathered an army of 3000 young people and laymen and brought them here to the city of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), claiming that he is prohibiting the evil and fighting in the way of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and the fact of the matter is that he is the one who is evil and he is the one that jihad should be made against and so he came and caused great trials in Madinah and made the people scared and killed the Khalifah. And Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says "And whoever intentionally kills a believer then he will be in the hellfire forever and he will face the anger and curse of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala)."

The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is showing us here the evil that was done by this man and he said "that Madinah is a haram (sanctuary) from the mountain of Ayr to the mountain of Thur . Whoever does a corrupt action in it or protects one who is corrupt, then he will face the curse of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), and His Angels, and all of the people and Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) will not accept from him any obligatory deed that he has done nor any voluntary action that he has done. They will not have any of his actions accepted on the Day of Qiyyamah."

However, here what has happened is that the innovation that they were involved in caused their eyes to be blind just as it caused their hearts to be blind and it caused them to not have any insight. And innovation corrupts ones ibadah just as it corrupts ones belief as well as the character of an individual. It also corrupts the Aqeedah or belief of the love that you should have for an individual and those who you should separate yourself from. So these are Masakeen (poor people, not in wealth but in religion) and the fact that they had this innovation with them, it caused them not to realize whom they should be affiliate with and whom they should love as well as whom they should disassociate themselves from.

When they came to Madinah they caused a lot of problems for Uthman in the masjid. He said one time he was given the Khutbah on the Day of Jumuah and was on the mimbar and one of the trouble makers began to come towards him and stepped on the mimbar, so Uthman went down. And the Sahabah became very angry when this happened and from amongst them was Ali and his children Al Hassan and Al Hussayn and likewise Aishah and the remainder of the mothers of the believers and they wanted to go fight with these people. However Uthman prevented them from doing so.

Then after that they made him a prisoner in his own home and prevented him from going out to Jumuah and praying in the Jamaa'ah and he was patient with all of that, and the Sahaba wanted to fight these khawarij however Uthman prevented them from doing so. Why would Uthman prevent them from this?

The Shaykh said when he was young, in the beginning of seeking knowledge; he used to be really taken aback by the fact that Uthman prevented the Sahabah from fighting these people and would ask, why would Uthman do this? However when he went and read the biography of Uthman, he found out that he was a lot more knowledgeable then he was and had a lot more fear of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) then we have and he had knowledge of this fitnah and knew they were going to kill him. So he said why would I harm the Ummah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) because of me, and said I don't want to be the first one who brings an innovation or harm to the Ummah of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), because they will kill me and it will be over. So for this reason when Ali came to protect Uthman, he prevented Ali from this and he made an oath with the companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and said that if any of you that obeys me, return back to your homes. And this shows you the great Iman that Uthman had and his true belief in what the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said.

He said look the sword is being raised in front of me and he bears witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except for Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was the messenger of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala), so he believes that which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) informed him about.

This is to show you that it is upon a Muslim to take the texts and not to go against the texts that come from the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) with his intellect and especially in times of trials and tribulation.

They killed Uthman while he was fasting and he was more then 80 years old at that time, a very old man. He was sitting there reading the Quran and waiting for the decree of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and what was to come. Some of his blood dropped on the Mus'haff and those khawarij prevented the family of Uthman from burying him so when the people went to sleep his family entered and took him and they buried him outside of the Baqi. Then when the graveyard was expanded, his grave became from within the graveyard.

Uthman was not harmed by his Iman nor by his belief of that which the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said. Nor was he harmed by him being eager to preserve the blood of Muslims because Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) says: "Because of that We ordained for the Children of Israel that if anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or (and) to spread mischief in the land - it would be as if he killed all mankind, and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind…(5:32)" So Uthman was doing this to save the lives of the Muslims.

The Shaykh went on to say that by way of this Uthman became a martyr and gained the Jannah of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) and said in reality to study of the life of Uthman is something that is very beneficial and something that is also something you will find great pleasure in doing, so some of the things we can go back to in terms of resources to study about Uthman, in terms of his virtues, then we should read the famous six books of Hadeeth because each of these six books contains ahadeeth that talk about the virtues of Uthman. (Sunan Al Bukhari, Sunan Al Muslim, Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan At Tirmidhi, Sunan An Nasa'i, Sunan Ibn Majah" Also as it relates to his biography in general, then you can go back to the book that is known as "Fitnah related to the death of Uthman" by Dr. Muhammad bin Abdullah al Ghabban."

So we ask Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) to have mercy upon Uthman and the Shaykh made dua to Allah saying "Oh Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) indeed we love your Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) so love us and indeed we love his companions so love us, and we love Abu Bakr, and Umar, and Uthman and Ali so love us. Oh Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) we love the companions of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) all of them, our mothers-his wives, and the rest of his family. Oh Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) we ask you to place us in the Jannah with them even if we didn't do what they did, out of our love for them, and Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) knows best."

Then there was a request for questions, but then the Shaykh then went on to say "No Questions, sleepy, sleepy time."
