...and Hold on to the Rope of Allaah
By: Shaykh Alee Raazi At-Tuwayjaree حفظه الله Delivered on: Saturday, August 21, 2004 بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمنِ الرَّحِيم
Bismillaahir-Rahmaanir-Raheem
(In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy) Indeed all praise is due to Allaah the Lord of the Worlds. And may His peace and blessings be upon the Noble Messenger, his family, Companions, all of them until the Day of Judgment. Introduction to the Shaykh Our Shaykh حفظه الله تعالى is a well known scholar in Saudi Arabia. He is a teacher and professor at The Islaamic University of Madeenah al-Munawwarah in the College of Qur'aan and Tafseer. From amongst his Mashaaikh are Ash-Shaykh, al-Imaam, 'Abdul 'Azeez 'Abdullah ibn Baaz Introduction to the Lecture The Shaykh حفظه الله began by mentioning the Name of Allah the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy, and continued with Khutbatul-Haajah. Indeed all praise is due to Allaah. We praise Him, we seek His Help and His Forgiveness. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and the wrongdoings and consequences of our actions. Whosoever Allaah guides, there is none to misguide. Whomsoever Allaah misguides, there is none to guide. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allaah. And I bear witness that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلمis His slave and Messenger. May Allaah bestow His Salaat on him, his family, his companions and all those who follow them till Yawm ad-Deen.
{O you who believe! Fear Allaah (by doing all that He has ordered and by abstaining from all that He has forbidden) as He should be feared.
(Obey Him, be thankful to Him, and remember Him always,) and die not except in a state of Islaam [as Muslims (with complete submission to Allaah)].} [Aal-'Imraan 3:102] وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَاذْكُرُواْ نِعْمَتَ اللّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنتُمْ أَعْدَاء فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا وَكُنتُمْ عَلَىَ شَفَا حُفْرَةٍ مِّنَ النَّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنْهَا
كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللّهُ لَكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ {And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur'aan), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allaah's Favour on you,
for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islaamic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allaah makes His Aayaat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.} [Aal-'Imraan 3:103] This is after Allaah سبحانه وتعالى tells the people, after giving them the characteristic of being believers, Al-Mu’minoon to fear Him, and this is by doing what He orders and by staying away from what He has prohibited. And as in the hadith narrated by Ibn Mas'ood
"If you hear 'O you who believe...!' then listen to it as it is either good you are ordered to do or evil you are ordered to stay away from." [1]
And we must fear Allaah as He should be feared by holding fast to the Rope of Allaah and by holding fast to Allaah Himself. And this holding fast is holding on to what you are ordered (to do) and staying firm upon it and it keeps one away from that which is forbidden. And there is no safety without these two (matters), and being happy in this life revolves around (these two matters): 1) Holding on to the Rope of Allaah will save you from being misguided and Our Shaykhحفظه الله went on to say that Ibnul Qayyim رحمه الله said: فأما الاعتصام بحبله: فإنه يعصم من الضلالة والاعتصام به: يعصم من الهلكة
“Holding on to the Rope of Allaah is security from misguidance and holding fast to Allaah Himself is security from destruction.” [2]
So holding on to the Rope of Allaah necessitates guidance (for the individuals who do so). And holding on to Allaah Himself brings forth power, readiness, arms, strength, righteousness, highness, and might. And the sayings of Salaf differ in their interpretation of ‘Rope of Allaah’. So Ibn 'Abbaas رضي الله عنهم said: "Holding on to the Rope of Allaah is holding on to the Deen of Allah." and Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه said: "It is the Jama'ah” and he said “and upon you is to hold on to the Jama'ah as it is the Rope of Allaah that He has ordered us with and this holding fast together is better than being apart.” Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه and others also said, "It is the Qur'aan." And in a narration from Ibn Mas'ood رضي الله عنه it is reported that the Prophet, صلى الله عليه و على آله و سلم said: إن هذا القرآن حبل الله والنور المبين والشفاء النافع عصمة لمن تمسك به ونجاة لمن اتبعه
"The Qur'aan is the Rope of Allaah and it is the light which guides and it is the medicine that is beneficial and it is what protects from destruction."[3] And it is reported that 'Alee رضي الله عنه said that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said: هو حبل الله المتين وهو الذكر الحكيم وهو الصراط المستقيم هو الذي لا تزيغ به الأهواء ولا تلتبس به الألسنة ولا يشبع منه العلماء ولا يخلق على كثرة
"The Qur'aan is the strong Rope of Allaah and it is the Wise Remembrance and it is the Straight Path. And it is what the tongue cannot deviate from.
And no matter how much it is repeated it cannot be worn out (by being read too much) and the 'Ulamaa’ (scholars) do not get enough of it." [4] And this Rope of Allaah is submitting and being obedient to Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and staying away from splitting. And the Shaykh حفظه الله said: And do not be like the Jews and the Christians by splitting into sects. And in the Muwatta of Imaam Maalik, on the authority of Aboo Hurayrah, رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه و سلم said: إن الله يرضى لكم ثلاثا ويسخط لكم ثلاثا يرضى لكم أن تعبدوه ولا تشركوا به شيئا وأن تعتصموا بحبل الله جميعا وأن تناصحوا من ولاه الله أمركم
"Allaah is pleased with three things from you, and He is angry with three things from you. He is pleased that you worship Him and do not associate anything with Him, and that you take hold of the rope of Allaah altogether,
and that you give good counsel to the one to whom Allaah gives command over you..." [5] And with regards to the different interpretations, they are not contradictory interpretations; it all means the same thing. And Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله as he said in Minhaj As-Sunnah "The Rope of Allaah is Al-Islaam and obedience, and submission, and sincerity, and holding fast and being firm and being with the Jama'ah" And this is true. The Qur’aan has ordered with Islaam, and obedience, and submission, and sincerity, and holding fast, and the Jama'ah. And the truth of all this goes back to al-Ikhlaas: having complete sincerity to Allaah سبحانه و تعالى and this is taken from the Sahaaba, and the Tabi'een, and those who followed them in righteousness (as-Salaf-us-Saalih). And it is narrated from Ibn Jareer in his Tafsir from Qataadah رحمه الله that he said about this Aayah: وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَاذْكُرُواْ نِعْمَتَ اللّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ
{...and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh's Favour on you...} [Aal-'Imraan 3:103]
ورضي لكم السمعَ والطاعة والألفة والجماعة، فارضوا لأنفسكم ما رضى الله لكم إن استطعتم، ولا قوّة إلا بالله "He warned against splitting and prohibited it. And He ordered with listening and obeying and love between each other and holding fast to the Jama'ah and being upright.
And there is no power or might except with Allaah." [6] The Shaykh حفظه الله mentioned that we will be talking about the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم on certain points using evidences from the Qur'aan and the Sunnah (related to the affair of holding fast to the Rope of Allaah). The points to be focused upon on are as follows: Firstly: Holding fast to the Qur'aan using proofs from Qur'aan So we will be using Ahadeeth and Aayaat to prove the danger of contradicting the Qur'aan and the Sunnah. Proofs from the Qur’aan And from the proofs from the Qur'aan for holding on to the Qur'aan: كِتَابٌ أَنزَلْنَاهُ إِلَيْكَ مُبَارَكٌ لِّيَدَّبَّرُوا آيَاتِهِ وَلِيَتَذَكَّرَ أُوْلُوا الْأَلْبَابِ
{(This is) a Book (the Qur'aan) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings, that they may ponder over its Verses,
and that men of understanding may remember.} [Saad 38:29] And Allaah
{And this is a blessed Book (the Qur'aan) which We have sent down, so follow it and fear Allaah (i.e. do not disobey His Orders),
that you may receive mercy (i.e. saved from the torment of Hell).} [al-An'aam 6:155] إِنَّ هَـذَا الْقُرْآنَ يِهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا كَبِيرًا
{Verily, this Qur'aan guides to that which is most just and right and gives glad tidings to the believers (in the Oneness of Allaah and His Messenger
Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم), who work deeds of righteousness, that they shall have a great reward (Paradise).
{Then if there comes to you guidance from Me, then whoever follows My Guidance he shall neither go astray nor shall be distressed.} [TaaHaa 20:123]
{But whosoever turns away from My Reminder (i.e. neither believes in this Qur'aan nor acts on its teachings), verily, for him is a life of hardship,
and We shall raise him up blind on the Day of Resurrection.} [TaaHaa 20:124] قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَتَّبِعُ مَا يِوحَى إِلَيَّ مِن رَّبِّي هَـذَا بَصَآئِرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمْ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ ~ وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُواْ لَهُ وَأَنصِتُواْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ
{Say: "I but follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This (the Qur'aan) is nothing but evidences from your Lord, and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe." ~ So, when the Qur'aan is recited, listen to it, and be silent that you may receive mercy [i.e. during the compulsory congregational prayers when the Imaam (of a mosque) is leading the prayer (except Surah Al-Faatihah), and also when he is delivering the Friday-prayer Khutbah]. } [al-A'raaf 7:203-204]
And these are the meanings of what is in the Qur'aan. Proofs from the Sunnah The Shaykh حفظه الله went on to say: “As for the proofs from the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allaah, صلى الله عليه و على آله و سلم is what is narrated in Saheeh Muslim: وقد تركت فيكم ما لن تضلوا بعده إن اعتصمتم به كتاب الله
"...I have left among you the Book of Allaah, and if you hold fast to it, you would never go astray..." [7]
مَنْ اتَّبَعَهُ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى وَمَنْ تَرَكَهُ كَانَ عَلَى ضَلَالَةٍ "I have left two things, the Book of Allah, it is guidance and light so take from it and hold fast to it and it is the Rope of Allah,
whoever sticks to it will be guided, whoever leaves it will be misguided and go towards destruction." [8] And Tabaraanee narrated in his Kabeer in Saheeh at-Targheeb from `Alee ibn Abi Taalib رضي الله عنه that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم came out to us one day and he was frightened, and he said: أطيعوني ما كنت بين أظهركم وعليكم بكتاب الله أحلوا حلاله وحرموا حرامه رواه الطبراني في الكبير
"Be obedient to me as long as I am with you, and upon you is holding onto to Book of Allaah to make halaal what it has made halaal
and to make haraam what it has made haraam." [9] In Imam Malik's Muwatta , and also found in al-Haakim and declared Hassan by al-Albaanee رحمه الله that he صلى الله عليه وسلم said: تركت فيكم أمرين لن تضلوا ما إن تمسكتم بهما: كتاب الله وسنتي ولن يتفرقا حتى يردا على الحوض
"I have left behind amongst you two things, the Book of Allaah and my Sunnah, and they will not be separated from each other until you meet me at the Pond (al-Hawd)
[the river that the Messenger of Allah, صلى الله عليه و سام will be given on the Day of Judgement]." [10] Tabaraanee narrated from Abee Shurayh al-Khuzaa’ee that the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سام said: إن هذا القرآن سبب طرفه بيد الله وطرفه بأيديكم فتمسكوا به فإنكم لن تضلوا ولن تهلكوا بعده أبدا
This Qur'aan is like a rope, one side is with Allaahسبحانه و تعالى and the other side is with you, so hold on fast to it so that you may be guided.
So if you hold to it you will never go astray and you will not be destroyed. [11] * * * This is where the lecture ended – it appears to be incomplete as the call ended suddenly * * * A statement from the organizers at AlBaseerah.org:
All praise is for Allaah the Lord of the worlds and may His Peace and Blessings be upon the Noble Messenger of Allaah O slaves of Allaah, may Allaah preserve you all, as it is clear from the theme of the conference: وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ
"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur'aan), and be not divided among yourselves." [Aal-'Imraan 3:103]
…what a beautiful and lofty theme of this blessed conference. Its beauty and loftiness can never be witnessed, and its sweetness cannot be tasted until we reflect upon it openly. By the way, brothers and sisters, this is something (referring to the theme of the conference) we all desire and something for which we have all gathered. It is one of the few most important obligations of our times. But in order for us to accomplish this goal, this affair must not be a lip service. Rather we must fully understand its implications and strive to cure all problems related to this issue from its root. O my noble brothers and sisters in Islaam, may Allaah bless you all tremendously. Know that the theme of this conference did not come ‘out of the blue’, rather this (uniting the Muslims upon the truth) is something that the scholars are talking about in their lectures, commanding about it, and highlighting in almost every lecture. All praise belongs to Allaah, we were blessed to have with us as-Shaykh 'Abdullaah Abdur-Rahmaan Al-Ghudyaan, Shaykh Muhammad Ibn 'Abdullaah As-Subayl, Shaykh Rabee' Ibn Haadi Al-Madkhali, and now, ash-Shaykh, al-Doctor, Ali Ibn Raazi At-Tuwayjari, may Allaah preserve them all. Brothers and sisters in Islaam, the theme of this conference is a direct result of what is being witnessed of division and differences between Salafi brothers and sisters globally more so in Western countries. O slaves of Allaah. The theme of this conference is based on the command and direct order of our Lord: وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ
"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur'aan), and be not divided among yourselves." [Aal-'Imraan 3:103]
Alhamdullillaah that He allowed us to hold this conference; so let every single one of us thank Allaah سبحانه و تعالى for making this event possible and a success. And then let us all thank all those who organized and worked towards holding and having this conference. We thank Allaah عز و جل for giving us the ability and tawfeeq to hold the conference and making it possible and a success. O slaves of Allaah! Let everyone of us actively strive towards unity upon the truth.
Let us put our personal differences and problems aside. Let us start on a fresh page. Let us manifest and be a live example of brotherhood based upon Faith. Let us show brotherhood in its purest form in our speech and actions. Let us promise ourselves that we will not we leave this room without shaking hands with those who we have problems with or who we abandoned because of personal problems. Let us look to our right the left and turn to those who we oppressed and seek forgiveness and pardon after seeking forgiveness from Allaah. And let us stop the discord and race and be quick to shake hands and give salaams to those from amongst the people of the truth whom we have discord with. Chit-chatting, shaking hands and giving salaams to your friends is not the comprehensive understanding of the theme of this conference: وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ
"And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allaah (i.e. this Qur'aan), and be not divided among yourselves." [Aal-'Imraan 3:103]
Rather go to someone who you have a problem with, shaking his hand and welcoming him with all your heart is indeed effective towards unity and stopping the discord. Brothers and sisters in Islaam, after thanking Allaah سبحانه و تعالى I would like to take this opportunity to extend gratitude and sincerely thank the Administration of Madinah Masjid and Madinah Academy for hosting this conference and taking great care of their guests. Brothers and sisters in Islaam please join me in thanking and making du’aa for all those who contributed in making this conference a tremendous success and of course special thanks to the Imaam of the masjid Abu ‘Umar Muhammad حفظه الله and Umm Ibraaheem حفظها الله for their great cooperation, extraordinary spirit and hard work. I also feel obligated to thank all the brothers and sisters who worked day and night organizing, planning, and holding this event. And the top of them, those hardworking brothers, are our beloved brothers Muhammad Salamaat, Muhammad Sulaymaan, (names unclear), Omar Shaakir and Ikhwan Shabazz. May Allaah bless them all for their efforts and for their par excellent job, and may Allaah سبحانه و تعالى reward them with the best in the dunya and best of the Hereafter. Unfortunately, we are not able to get back in touch with the Shaykh as his phone is still busy. So inshaa-Allaah ta 'aala, we will wrap up and end here today. Glory be to You O Allaah, and to You belongs all praise and thanks. I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I seek your forgiveness and to You I turn in repentance.
